Just what is "necrotic slough" anyway?

Naturally, after Rod renamed his team I was curious to find out what that wacky name meant, so I sent him an e-mail asking that very thing...

Hi Sam!!

Remember when I told you that I was working as a
physical therapy aide at a local hospital? One
service sometimes provided by physical therapy is
wound care. My clinic provides this service, so I've
seen a fair amount of damn nasty wounds. One of the
nastiest is quite descriptively called a "black wound;"
they are wounds which are so bad that the tissue in
the area is dying (and thus colored black). These
wounds are often treated by removing the dead tissue,
so that the living tissue can "breathe" and rebuild
itself - the dead tissue can be called necrotic slough,
necrotic describing the dead nature of the tissue,
slough indicating that it should "slough off" or be
removed.

Why did I name my team this way? Well, I wanted to
change the name, and I wanted something nasty and a
little...well, dreadful. What could be more dreadful
than Necrotic Slough (I should point out that I was
trying to come up with a better name, but suddenly Week
1 was upon me, and I picked the roughest of the names
I had so far considered)?

Now you know...
